The Rupture
Today has been seismic in terms of the US UK relationship. Trump’s disgusting slur against NATO allied soldiers on Fox News angered millions of people across Europe. Politicians are incensed enough to abandon diplomacy. The Greenland threat and tariff blackmail were outrageous, but dealt with in diplomatic and conventional dialogue. Downing Street issued a strong rebuke, but as national anger rose and spread, Sir Keir Starmer made a damning statement, calling Trumps remarks insulting, and appalling, and demanding an apology. This is the rupture of which Mark Carney spoke.
A rupture triggered most unexpectedly by dignity, honour, decency and morality. The straw that broke the camel’s back was not coercion, threat or blackmail, but a lack of human decency.
